The A-4 Skyhawk flown by the Blue Angels is a jet-powered attack aircraft originally designed to operate from the United States Navy (USN) aircraft carriers. Manufactured by McDonnell Douglas, the A4 Skyhawk aircraft was introduced on December 1974 and served until 1986. The A-4 Skyhawk aircraft design is a good example of simplicity, Skyhawk is of conventional post WWII design. A-4 Skyhawk has a low-mounted delta-wing, tricycle undercarriage and a single turbojet engine in the rear fuselage. The Blue Angels transitioned to a new aircraft, the McDonnell Douglas A-4F Skyhawk II to replace the thundering F-4, and adopted Skyhawk. Through the Skyhawk A4 the Blue Angel had an aircraft that was much more acrobatic than before and was allowed tighter display in front of the audience. The design of the A-4 Skyhawk was minimized in size, weight and complexity. The Skyhawk remained in production until 1979.
