F6F Hellcat is the first aircraft that the Blue Angels used. F6F Hellcat was manufactured by Grumman, presently known the Boeing. The Grumman F-6F Hellcat together with the Vought F4U Corsair was the primary carrier fighters of the United States Navy (USN) in the second half of the World War II. On the 15th of June 1946 the newly named team Blue Angels performed their first flight demonstration, led by Lt. Commander Roy Voris; the Blue Angels team was equipped with 3 Grumman F6F-5 Hellcats. Voris chose the plane he flew during the war, the Grumman F6F-5 Hellcat. However, the F6F-5 hellcats were modified to reduce weight by removing such non-essential guns, armor and ammo boxes. The color on the planes either insignia blue or a semi gloss sea blue and used actual gold leaf for the United States Navy (USN) painted on the fuselage sides and the lower half of their wings, as well as for the individual team number on the tail. The F6F Hellcat was used for the first time in January of 1943; the Grumman F6F became the United States Navy’s (USN) most important fighter of the World War II. The First Air Show of the Blue Angels also gave the Blue Angels’ trophy. The “diamond” formation of today started with the F6F Hellcats.
