After carving the wood, the PBM-3 Mariner wooden model airplane will undergo stages of fine sanding, between primer coats, to produce a silky smooth finish ready for final painting. The PBM 3 Mariner model seaplane will be painted according to the specific color scheme of the US Navy PBM-3 Mariner aircraft for their historical significance and authenticity. The PBM-1 was equipped with retractable wing landing floats that were hinged inboard, while the PBM-3 had fixed floats. Also the fuselage of the PBM-3 was three feet longer than the PBM-1. ThePBM-3 had an increased fuel capacity and armament, and a crew of nine instead of the seven of the PBM-1. The initial fifty were completed as unarmed PBM-3R transports. In September 1942 production of the PBM-3C began. This version had three power-operated turrets, each with twin Browning .50 caliber machine-guns. The PBM-3C was equipped with search radar and could carry two torpedoes. A small number of PBM-3B Mariners served with British Coastal Command in 1943, as 'Mariner GR.Is'. The PBM-3D had once again more powerful - 1900 hp - engines, a yet further increased gun armament of eight .50 caliber Brownings and a bomb load of 4,000 lb. The PBM-3S was a long-range anti-submarine version with a lightened armament and increased fuel capacity.
