The Douglas C-47 Skytrain or Dakota is a military transport that was developed from the Douglas DC-3 airliner. During World War II, the armed forces of many countries used the C-47 and modified DC-3s for the transport of troops, cargo and wounded. Over 10,000 aircraft were produced in Long Beach and Santa Monica, California and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

The Battle of Normandy was fought in 1944 between Nazi Germany in Western Europe and the invading Allied forces as part of the larger conflict of World War II. Over sixty years later, the Normandy invasion, codenamed Operation Overlord, still remains the largest sea borne invasion in history, involving almost three million troops crossing the English Channel from England to Normandy.
